Frisbee

Yesterday I had planned on sleeping all day until Drew texted me at 11AM asking if I wanted to go to the park. Well, by then I was already getting bored with my sleep-all-day plan, so I happily accepted.

I met Drew and Doug at the station. We went to Boramae park, which wasn't even on my map, and which consisted of a huge field with one entire half of it roped off. We happened to sit in the roped-off section, along with countless other people. We were listening to music and enjoying our chips and riceballs (those things are delicious) when a guy in black with a walkie-talkie on his hip came over and said something to us in Korean. He then moved on to talk to every other person with a blanket laid out on that side of the park. We turned to Drew to find out what the guy had said. He shrugged. "I think he wants us to leave," he said.

Well, no one else was moving, so we sure weren't going to. We laughed that if they wanted to close an entire half of the park, they'd need a couple dozen security officers patrolling the perimeter. Well, sure enough, a few minutes later the man in black returned with a couple dozen compatriots. This time people actually started moving, so we picked up and relocated to the other side of the park. When we looked back at the roped-off section, there were two men in black sitting in the very center at all times (I suppose they were ready to run like attack dogs at anyone who crossed the rope).
The boys tried to play volleyball, but the ball they brought was pretty crappy. That's Drew in the right and Doug on the left. Doug is pretty cool. He said that the Koreans working at the school where he teaches have a hard time with his name for some reason. The kids in his class apparently decided that it sounds like "dog." "Mong" is the Korean word for the sound a dog makes, so the kids nicknamed him "Mong-mongi Teacher." It'd be like a bunch of kindergarteners calling their teacher "Mr. Bow-wow."

We also played frisbee with a truly crappy frisbee (it had some kind of rubber ridge around the outside that was supposed to make it easier to catch but only seemed to make it wobble when it flew). The park was so crowded that at one point there was another game of frisbee that actually crossed paths with ours. I once threw our frisbee only to find another flying at my face.

I find myself in the unfamiliar position of having homework to do. I have to write six pages for my online class, which is turning out to be harder than I expected. And I have homework for Korean class. I think today might be homework day, if the nice weather doesn't get the best of me.

  3. Hey girl! Yeah, it's not really a class. I'm just getting credit for last summer's internship but I still have to write an essay for it (one page to go now!).

I really miss you. I've been noticing my distinct lack of girlfriends lately, and I'd kill to have you here. I hope my Korean is good enough to actually be useful by the time I get back, so you don't have to laugh at my lame attempts. In the meantime you should get Skype. It's been working pretty well for me and I'm pretty sure your laptop has a built-in camera. I want to know what you've been up to, or even just talk about nothing so long as I can see your face! <3
