The Hurt Locker

So with it raining and blowing outside, but with me not feeling up to another entire day in front of a computer screen, I opted for an enormous theater screen instead and went back to the Megabox theater in the underground mall. I saw The Hurt Locker because hey, I'd heard a lot of good things about it and it won an Oscar so it couldn't be too bad. Plus the only other movies in English were some BS featuring Jennifer Aniston and Kickass (although I saw a preview for Kickass and I might actually have to watch it now just to see that purple-haired girl pull off that sweet bullet-time fight scene).

Anyway. The Hurt Locker. I really liked it, and this is coming from someone who doesn't usually like war movies. Seriously. I usually find them to be gray, unintelligible, loud love letters to machismo. I found Full Metal Jacket depressing, Platoon confusing, and in Black Hawk Down I couldn't understand a word anyone was saying (although Band of Brothers remains one of my favorite things that I have ever seen on a screen, so I'm always open to the possibility of greatness).

The Hurt Locker was remarkable because it peeled back the layers on the maverick hero that war movies seem to like so much. It delved into what made him the way he was, and whether it was necessarily a good thing. The brave, heroic things he tried to do ended up being misinformed and stupid, and his turning-point "war is hell" moment that drove a lot of his stupid decisions was later invalidated by a case of mistaken identity (which I thought was subversive and brilliant). And it also got a lot of points for having a black guy who never died and who actually was the emotional anchor for the whole movie.

So, as I do, I check out the IMDb boards to find out if anyone agreed with my assessment. And HOLY HATEDOM, BATMAN! The amount of bile on that forum is staggering. Too bad. I would have liked to have a civil discussion.

  2. Ahhh! I love Dexter! Haven't watched it in a while though, since people said that they started a weird plotline about his murderer-alter-ego actually being a demon that's piggybacking on his soul... and they killed Rita. Goddamn them. But the first two seasons were pure joy.
